The changing climate will also have an impact on the food we eat, what we are exposed to from various sources and therefore in the end our day to day life.
Rising temperatures will increase the risk of diseases spread by insects. The outspread of toxic algae will tend to increase. All factors which will influence our lives.
In recent years the Iberian snail has become more widespread in many regions. This increases the risk of bacteria being transferred to vegetables. Hence e-coli bacteria and salmonella may become more widespread. Similar urban flooding with sewage water increases the risk of contamination and spreading of diseases.
A warmer and moister climate will increase the risk of mildew in our homes. This again will lead to an increase in allergy. Something, which already is noticeable in many areas.
An increased awareness of what the food we eat has been exposed to and all the other products which we use is therefore required. Legislation is beginning to address these issues. We must be aware of what we expose ourselves to. At DHI we provide the expertise which addresses the issues – from food safety to chemicals.
