Urban flooding

Climate changes will affect the precipitation pattern worldwide and may have serious impact on major cities.

It is in the interest of society to protect the population and infrastructure against potential future flooding. This can be achieved through estimation of the local climate change pattern with subsequent analyses of the impacts on the urban sewer and drainage systems.

DHI provides the knowledge and tools for identifying the problems and developing the adaptation strategies to cope future climate changes in a structured and concise manner. The procedure aims at clarification of the impacts of climate changes in three steps:

  • Check whether the impacts of climate changes will result in a violation of the local standards
  • If the standards are violated due to climate change, then an estimate of the extent of the violation is required. I.e. estimate the flood extent and the flood damages.
  • If the flood damages are significant then the analysis feeds into a prioritized planning scheme on how to mitigate the expected flood problems. Here, DHI has vast experience in preparation of flood alleviation schemes and can help reducing the climate change problem in the most cost efficient way.
